Before Dawn
Album: Miles Before Today
Lyrics by Melissa Bianco
Nostalgic 1970s-inspired soft rock with acoustic guitar, warm bass, and expressive female vocals, recalling a mother’s early-morning gift to her girls: hot cocoa and play on a frozen pond.
Lyrics
Hair brushed from my eyes
Still dark, no light in the sky
Blankets close, dawn’s not here yet
Too early to crawl from my warm bed
A whisper is soft in my ear
Mom’s voice says “Time to go, dear”
I slide out of bed already clothed
Ready since the night before
We waited for weeks
Now it’s finally safe
The pond is frozen
It’s time to play
The kitchen is dark except a candle
Bodies moving, shifting shadows
My sister and I are up before dawn
We huddle together trying to get warm
The pot of milk gently simmers
Mom adds chocolate and slowly stirs
We thank her for our steaming cups
And sip our cocoa until we wake up
We waited for weeks
Now it’s finally safe
The pond is frozen
It’s time to play
Bundled in layers we’re buried in cloth
No chance for a cold we are too hot
Just a few steps and our feet meet ice
It’s dusted with snow, the powder feels nice
No blades beneath us, doesn’t matter
Gliding on ice is all we’re after
We push away wobbly at first
Then slip and slide on the frozen earth
We waited for weeks
Now it’s finally safe
The pond is frozen
It’s time to play
For an hour or two we dance and play
Sliding and falling every which way
We laugh and squeal until the sun comes up
School starts soon, it’s time to stop
Faces pink we can’t help but smile
The frozen pond was ours for a while
A simple memory frozen that day
My mom rose early and made it that way
