Lyrics

We drove 3 hours to meet a Russian Blue
You picked me rather than me choosing you
Not two minutes after meeting me
You crawled onto my arm and fell asleep

Long drive home, crying, no rest
Switched seats, you slept on my chest
Just a tiny kitten, barely a scruff
My heart was stolen, I was in love

We have animals for a short time
But they love us their entire life
Over the rainbow bridge, you went away
If life is kind, I’ll see you again someday

Quick and curious, mischievous at times
A predator’s grace, smooth gray lines
Smart and gentle, family-friendly, too
Social with strangers, when it suited you

You loved being carried on my hip
Breakfast ran late, your patience slipped
We had to kid-proof the cabinets
Your paws were adventure magnets

We have animals for a short time
But they love us their entire life
Over the rainbow bridge, you went away
If life is kind, I’ll see you again someday

Every cat parent knows routines are key
Miss a meal or moment, the whines are free
Dad carried you in his arms like a baby
You gazed at him, tapped his face gently

I taught you to use the toilet
I was lazy, you didn’t mind it
Chasing balls, watching TV
Or just happy to nap on me

Funny thing about time, it never stands still
From kitten to adult, then you grew ill
You lost weight, couldn’t eat or drink
What was wrong? We didn’t know what to think

To the vet, in the height of COVID
They wouldn’t let us in, you were sedated
If we’d known, would’ve stayed that day
Prognosis dire, yet we drove away

We have animals for a short time
But they love us their entire life
Over the rainbow bridge, you went away
If life is kind, I’ll see you again someday

The vet called later that night
It was cancer, no cure in sight
To my despair, we made the call
No proper goodbye, our time too small

If I could reverse regret and go back in time
You’d be in my arms with your eyes on mine
Slow-blink gaze, I’d say goodbye to you
With love and assurance, just us two

We have animals for a short time
But they love us their entire life
Over the rainbow bridge, you went away
If life is kind, I’ll hold you again someday
If life is kind, I’ll hold you again someday
